Tell us about your film A Moment of Solace?  What`s it all about?

This film is like my personal love letter to music. I think music is a universal language that everyone has an innate understanding of from birth. As we live our lives, some songs can become so deeply connected to certain memories that just hearing the first few notes is enough to evoke a visceral reaction - making us feel like we're right back in a specific moment in time again. Sometimes that's positive, sometimes it's negative, or sometimes it's both. I hope this film captures that feeling of memory and connection.

How long does a film like A Moment of Solace take to make?

With it being so short it only took two days to shoot, and we definitely spent more time rearranging my living room and setting up lights than we did filming everything! But then life got pretty busy (I procrastinated) for a few months and I avoided editing anything, making the whole project take a lot longer than it ever should have…

Can you tell us more about the sound/production/costume design of your film?

I knew there was never going to be any dialogue and that the music was going to be extremely important in helping to tell the story. I wanted something a bit slow with a melancholic feel and took major inspiration from Chris Isaak’s ‘Blue Spanish Sky’. The trumpet solo on that song hits hard every time and is just *chef’s kiss*. I didn’t have to look far to find a composer either as my house mate Max Lozowsky is an unbelievably talented musician and was able to take the vague description of what I wanted and turn it into the perfect score.

Where did you get the inspiration when creating A Moment of Solace?

I had the concept for a few years before I decided to do anything with it, and I think the idea initially started out as an advert for a record player; The sound quality being so good that the listener felt like they were watching a personal performance of the music. When the time was right I was able to turn this concept into an actual story.

Were there any films that inspired you when creating A Moment of Solace?

I took some inspiration for the visuals from a one minute film called ‘The Wait’ by Nolt Vutthisak. It’s a really great short that you can easily watch on the YouTube channel ‘Morphine’.
