FILM SYNOPSIS

Tucked away in the modern city are lonely lives, marked out by dreary habits and routines, propped up by hopes, dreams and fantasies. And sometimes art.
And what props up the artist but an endless searching? Sifting through days and meals for the idea, the belief… the thing half-noticed, half-felt, half-recalled… until sometimes it comes. The spark, the moment when talent draws invisible engines into play. The moment when low goes high and even the dullest of materials may shine; and come forth.
Exploring the world of hand-modelled craft and sculpture through digital animation, this tender and uplifting film explores the transformative nature of creativity through the eyes of a disabled man living at the edges of a world which threatens to entirely pass him by.
A film made in partnership between sculptor James Lake and digital media agency Hot Knife. Produced by Shape Arts as part of the Adam Reynolds Award programme, supported by funding from Garfield Weston Foundation and Arts Council England.

DIRECTOR SYNOPSIS

James Lake

Lead Artist

James Lake (Exeter, UK) is an artist working predominantly with cardboard as a sculptural medium, favouring its recyclability, affordability, and availability. Producing sculptures which echo the detail and depth found within more ‘traditional’ practice, James’ work reflects ongoing economic and environmental upheaval in a search for common truth and the quiet humanity of small details, ordinarily drowned out by the noise and brightness of contemporary culture.
